Jacob deGrom has the potential to be the best pitcher of this generation.

On Sunday, the New York Mets ace set a new MLB record by allowing three or less earned runs for the 40th time in a row.

Excluding openers, deGrom now has the most straight starts in which he has allowed no more than four earned runs since earned runs were first recorded in 1913.

Jim Scott previously held the record for more than a century, completing the feat between June 1, 1913, and June 4, 1914.

DeGrom last allowed at least four earned runs in a game on September 3, 2019. After that, he allowed just one earned run over the next 28 innings to win his second Cy Young Award in a row.

DeGrom boasts stats that have rarely been matched. He has a 1.98 ERA with 888 strikeouts in his last 103 games dating back to 2017. He and Clayton Kershaw are the only pitchers in baseball history to have such a long career span.

Since 2017, he has not had a season ERA more than 2.50.

The Mets won their 93rd game of the season on Sunday thanks to deGrom's 13 strikeouts and 2-RBI performances by Jeff McNeil and Daniel Vogelbach. It's their highest wins since winning the NL East with 97 in 2006.
